This Plaza del Mosquit, located in the western part of Calpe's old town, is very beautiful. It's a small square but rich in history. In the mid-19th century, sections of the old town wall began to be demolished, opening up exits other than the two existing gates to the north and south. In the western part, a small space was reclaimed from the terraced fields at the foot of the slope leading to the Hermitage of San Salvador, which is now known as Plaza del Mosquit. It's called a plaza, but it's more of a small square. Perhaps because of the urban confines in which the people of Calpe lived within the walls, it's still customary to refer to a plaza as something that is simply a small square or the confluence of streets. This is the case with this spot, a junction between five roads, right in the old town. In this square, on the side wall of an existing building that borders it, we find a cobbled fountain, a beautiful tile mosaic at the bottom, and a gigantic mural at the top, the work of Elías Urbez, depicting various Mediterranean architectural motifs, from the most classical to the most popular. And in one corner, a composition that will delight the people of Elche: a Lady of Elche blended with Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Furthermore, this Plaza del Mosquit (Mosquit Square) is an important part of the town's life, culture, and festivities, as visitors witness the processions of the Patron Saint Festival or Holy Week, the gallop of the Bulls al Carrer (Bulls' Bulls) in their popular Desencaixonà (Dead Fall), or the Moorish and Christian Entraetes (Moorish and Christian Entraetes). This square is called the Mosquit Square purely ironically, as it was christened General Moscardó Square in the 1940s. But the Calpe residents, with a touch of humor, thought that in such a small space, it deserved the nickname "Mosquit." A visit to the old town of this beautiful coastal town in Calpe is highly recommended; it will amaze you, as well as its beaches and the imposing Peñón de Ifach.
